Artist's Comments

This is a fave of mine and I know of only 3 in existance. One is well over 100 years old and in a private collection in California. I carved the other 2. Those now reside in private collections as well.

This was carved from cow leg bone. The very same sort of bone you pick up at the Pet S'mart and give to Fido. Trust me, it's easier than going to the butcher and without all the muss and fuss to clean it up before cutting the blanks and carving.

Hooks like this are a wonderful example of the fine art of scrimshanding. With all the bone whalers had at their disposal, it became the material of choice for much of the wooden parts on a boat that wore out in the course of an expedition.

The original hook this is based on is carved from ivory.

I have a pencil and I know how to use it.

I once asked for directions and they told me "You are here". Now if only I could find that on a map.
