Artist's Comments

This is the first octopus and pearl hook I carved. It's made from a small chunk of whalebone that was dug out of the Columbia river bank near Portland. The black sea pearl is inside the arms. You can just barely make it out in the 'grip' of the curled tentacle.

It's one of the few 'ball in cage' hooks I've carved since 1996. Yes, the pearl is in the cage and can move about. No, I will not tell you how I got it in there. I have a few secrets I like to keep. ;D)

The hook is now part of a private collection.

I have a pencil and I know how to use it.

I once asked for directions and they told me "You are here". Now if only I could find that on a map.
