Found this vintage crochet square picture from the late 40s, possibly mid 50s and I liked the pattern and visual texture. Since I did not have the actual instructions, I had to nuc it out from the picture. I think I did a pretty good job of working it out and replicating it. The finished squares are 12 inches by 12 inches so it's perfect to create blankets from baby on up to king size. Just add more squares.
There are two colors of yarn being represented here. On the top is a creamy white called Aran by Red Heart and it's a worsted weight yarn. The bottom is the HL line ( I Love This Yarn) and it's a tweedy beige. Both are acrylic and should handle years of use.
That little sliver of wood just happens to be one of my simple crochet hooks I whipped out to sell at one outdoor event and I liked the way it felt in my hand when I crocheted with it.
The finished blanket and other more simple afghans are for sale and will get posted to Etsy. I'll add the URL to my page on Etsy in my journal as soon as I get the images uploaded.
Oh this is beautiful! I've never been able to crochet. I've tried dozens of times but just can't seem to 'nail it' other than make a mangled piece of knots. Knitting though, I'm pretty durn good at that!
Knots are nothing more than loops that forgot what they were supposed to be.
I had to go on a picture from an old pattern and that was back in the day when photos were printed in Moire patterns. Talk about deciphering dots. >_<
Anyways,it took me a couple of starts to get the start of it right, then a few rows beyond that to understand what the popcorn pattern actually was and how many doubles made the bump without being so big, it was too much.
The overall result is a wonderful knobbly texture and a squoziness to the blanket when all the squares are joined... And this takes a *lot* of squares to make what I would call a reasonable blanket/bed covering.
Now knitting... I like that. But I have to pull out my Skacel Turbo circulars and I had a couple custom made by the company to accommodate one blanket I knitted years ago. I'm not the fastest in either, but slow and steady wins the race... Or in my case, the blue ribbons when I entered my first piece of knitting in a county fair in 1998. Those ribbons are where I can look at them at my desk.
Moire, yeah that'd be hell of a paint to figure out, esp for tiny stuff like crochet.
I can't even knit w/ circular needles. I'm a straight knitter & don't mind weaving/sewing up things later on. I guess that makes me a noob.
Neat that you won a ribbon! That's so cool to display something like that.^^
My own knits are certainly not show-worthy, but more household needs such as dishcloths, hats, scarves. I can do a fancy dishcloth in a few hours though if I push myself.
