Sometimes it's hard for me to figure out what to classify a crochet hook as given that it could fall into so many different catagories.

Now this is a serious diversion from the usual bone or ivory crochet hooks I've done in the past. Someone actually suggested a sting ray barb as the foundation of a crochet hook... Well this intrigued me so much that I had to try it out.

I ordered a small barb from a guy in Florida and it arrived Friday afternoon. At first I thought the package was empty. Never seen a barb until now and you can imagine my surprise to see this 5 inch long chunk of evil waiting to bite my fingers at the first sign of inattentiveness.

Well ha! I fooled it! I filed off the barbs ASAP with my trusty 6 inch flat and began shaping it... Unfortunately I did not take pics of the silly thing while it still had the barbs. Trust me, they were *SHARP*. I knocked the tip off so I could get a reasonable hook and began the work of filing and sanding and polishing.

So here are the particulars:

Just a touch under 4.5 inches long
Size "B" (2.25 mm)

Not big but about the right size for thread work.

In a private collection. And yes, she is totally thrilled.

I think I shall get more from this man as I really like this material and it's pretty exotic for a crochet hook. Maybe next time, I'll use 1.5 million year old fossilized bone.

That's so cool! I'm not a crocheter, more of a knitter, but I'm pretty picky about my needles. How does it feel in the hand when you crochet with it?
:iconyonaka-yamako:
It feels funky... In a cool way I mean. It feels firm like the "baleen" type hooks by Bates but it goes from flat at the base and slightly fiberous to roundish at the tip. I'm sure I can make some scary cool knitting needles with a matched pair of barbs but barbs that long are hard to come by and they have a price that reflects it.

I have crocheted with this hook and I'm sure it will perform quite nicely. I'll be taking it to my local craft supply store (read: Hobby Lobby) and introduce the girls in the yarns section to this little gem.

I have a pencil and I know how to use it.

I once asked for directions and they told me "You are here". Now if only I could find that on a map.

I rather like the material. I think I should get more from this guy as soon as he returns from Tuscon.

I've never used the "baleen" needles (I've seen them though), but they seem to be very similar to Bryspun's needles (which are very nice! great points, very bendy). I can imagine how knitting needles made from these barbs would be scary cool, especially when accompanied by a very wicked grin. :D

Good luck with your evil plan! (you know it's an evil plan! Any plan that involves "Hey, look at my cool new toy" is an evil plan!)

How intriguing!

man, I wish you had taken the photo "before" as well as after, that would have been interesting.

Oops, my stripes are showing....

Boy have I had a mess of evil plans then. I've been working on a very special drop spindle made of Columbian amber and Steller's seacow bone for another avid spinner. It's small and is more for super fine silk and alpaca yarns than anything else.

Now I have made hooks from *real* baleen. I was very fortunate to get my hands on preban humpback baleen and gray whale baleen. I really liked the humpback baleen but it smells to high heaven even after 100 years (very salty and fish like) especially if it gets warm and wet.

The hooks made of that material are really neat and nifty. It conforms to the hand with continual use.

So I shall have fun with my many evil plans and I look forward to the look on the faces of those receiving them. Sometimes that's better than being paid for my work. ;D)

Fear not! I shall take a before before pic and post it. But honestly, it surprised me how sharp the silly thing is.
